Most people are unaware of the fact that many of the most famous companies
today are based in Cleveland, Ohio. In fact, most of the companies based in
Ohio are companies we see advertised. So, what are some of the most famous
and popular companies based in Ohio?
Let’s Go To the Parade
One of the most popular businesses you’ll find in Ohio is the department store
Macy’s which is Cincinnati based. And, thanks to the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
parade the store has become a household name. Now, there are Macy’s all over the
country, but Macy’s North is the one you’ll find in Ohio. And, to this day it’s
the store people flock to the most above all else, especially during the holidays.
Macy’s has also made a name for itself within popular culture. Perhaps the best
example is the movie Miracle on 34th Street, which centers most of the movie on
the Macy’s store.
Quaker
Another famous Ohio company is the Quaker Mills company, now known as the
Quaker Oats company. This infamous company began in 1877, in Ravenna, Ohio.
But, why did they change their company’s name? Well, in 1901 the company merged
with three other companies, which made them change their name. And, today they’re
a subsidiary of the Pepsi Company, but their new name is so iconic it’s good they
changed their name. One interested fact is in the year 1888 they employed up to
83 people, which made them the largest employers in Ravenna, Ohio. And, to this
day they’re a household name.
Fast Food Revolution
Next on the list of famous companies based in Ohio is Arby’s. This famous sandwich
restaurant was founded in Boardman, Ohio in 1964, and is one of the more popular fast
food restaurants today. Interestingly, the founders believed there was a future in fast
food, but they didn’t want to make another hamburger restaurant, so they stuck with
sandwiches. And, the name comes from the founder’s initials, the Raffel Brothers. Plus,
to this day, the restaurant is still rising in popularity. Even though headquarters is
in Georgia, it’ll always be remembered as an Ohio based company.
Cheese and Fabric
Finally, another popular business based in Ohio is the beloved Jo-Ann fabrics.
This popular fabric establishment is based in Hudson, Ohio, and had its start
in the early 1940's. In fact, Jo-Ann’s started when two German immigrants decided
to open a cheese shop in Cleveland. Originally, they started to also sell fabric,
and the sales were so good they decided to open up a second shop, specializing in
fabric. This small chain expanded in the 1960's and was forever known as Jo-Ann’s.
And, it’s still a store that is visited and loved by many.
Ohio has had a long career of popular and famous businesses; these four are but a
few of the many Ohio based companies. The majority of the population are probably
unaware these businesses have a relation to Ohio, and that is a travesty. The fact
that these companies exist is all thanks to the people of Ohio.
