AKRON

Phony sex ad investigation

AKRON: An Akron woman is pursuing criminal charges against the person who posted her picture, name and phone number as part of a phony sex advertisement on Craigslist, Beacon Journal news partner News 5 Cleveland reports.

The 47-year-old woman told the television station that she has received about 80 texts, some phone calls and pictures of private parts because of the ad.

“I want someone to know that you can’t do this,” she said. “This is not good. It’s not safe for women.”

The woman provided the name of a suspect to Akron police, who are investigating.

Legendary biking on North Dakota’s Maah Daah Hey trail">Legendary biking on North Dakota’s Maah Daah Hey trail

August 4th, 2017 by Our Webmaster

MEDORA, N.D.: For mountain bikers, North Dakota’s Maah Daah Hey Trail is such a treasure that people come from all over to experience it.

I drove with friends more than 1,000 miles to ride 100-plus miles of the single-track trail, which is no wider than a bike. And we weren’t the only non-Dakotans traveling long distances to do it. We met folks from Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Denver, Montana and Wyoming.

The MDH is located where the Great Plains meet the Badlands. To use North Dakota’s state slogan, it’s legendary. It connects the northern and southern units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the …read more

Trump backs GOP plan to push legal immigration changes">Trump backs GOP plan to push legal immigration changes

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Contributor

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump embraced legislation Wednesday that would dramatically reduce legal immigration and shift the nation toward a system that prioritizes merit and skills over family ties.

Trump joined with Republican Sens. David Perdue of Georgia and Tom Cotton of Arkansas to promote the bill, which has so far gained little traction in the Senate.

“This legislation demonstrates our compassion for struggling American families who deserve an immigration system that puts their needs first and puts America first,” Trump said during an event in the White House’s Roosevelt Room.

It was the latest example of the president championing an issue that animated …read more

Euthanasia used for 4.5 percent of deaths in the Netherlands">Euthanasia used for 4.5 percent of deaths in the Netherlands

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Contributor

LONDON: Euthanasia has become “common practice” in the Netherlands, accounting for 4.5 percent of deaths, according to researchers who say requests are increasing from people who aren’t terminally ill.

In 2002, the Netherlands became the first country in the world that made it legal for doctors to help people die. Both euthanasia, where doctors actively kill patients, and assisted suicide, where physicians prescribe patients a lethal dose of drugs, are allowed. People must be “suffering unbearably” with no hope of relief — but their condition does not have to be fatal.

“It looks like patients are now more willing to ask for …read more

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

Wednesday’s developments

Browns veteran defensive lineman Desmond Bryant is back on track toward starting after missing the entire 2016 season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Bryant appeared at tackle with the first-team defense during the sixth practice of training camp. It was the first time this summer he worked with the top unit.

“He is Des Bryant, no doubt,” coach Hue Jackson said when asked if the player appears to have returned to form. “He is just another guy that needed to get in shape, get back to the grind of playing and understanding our defense because it is different.”

Bryant, 31, is the …read more

Pentagon says two U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan blast">Pentagon says two U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan blast

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Contributor

KABUL, Afghanistan: A suicide bombing attack on a NATO convoy in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday left two American service members dead, a Pentagon spokesman said, despite repeated refusals by the U.S. military in Afghanistan to say whether there were any deaths in the assault claimed by the Taliban.

Navy Capt. Jeff Davis confirmed the casualties in the attack near Kandahar city. The Pentagon’s decision to release the figures seemed to contradict orders issued two months ago by Army Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, barring information about U.S. combat deaths until days after the incident.

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Contributor

DENVER: In between the magnificence and the migraines, Terrell Davis’ NFL voyage was book-ended by two bone-crushing hits that came to define a career remembered as much for its brevity as its brilliance.

The first hit harkened his arrival, the second one his departure.

Davis was just another lost-in-the-shuffle rookie back in 1995 filled with doubts when the Denver Broncos traveled to Tokyo for an exhibition game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“Let’s just say if I spoke better Japanese I wouldn’t be here,” said Davis, who contemplated quitting football right then and there. “I’m telling you, I was this close to walking …read more

Bridgestone Invitational: Cavaliers shooting guard J.R. Smith becomes Jason Day’s caddie for a day">Bridgestone Invitational: Cavaliers shooting guard J.R. Smith becomes Jason Day’s caddie for a day

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Ryan Lewis

Jason Day’s caddie for his practice round on Wednesday was a bit taller than normal. And compared to who usually carries Day’s bag, this new guy has one helluva jump shot.

Ahead of Thursday’s first round of the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club, Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith served as Day’s caddie, spending time around the putting greens and walking the back 9 with one of the world’s best.

The two met through Smith’s sport of choice and hit it off, leading Smith to ditch the court for a day in favor of a few fairways.

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Marla Ridenour

On Wednesday, Rory McIlroy confirmed the reported parting with his caddie of nine years, J.P. Fitzgerald, after the British Open.

But McIlroy isn’t sure if childhood friend Harry Diamond, the best man at his April wedding, will be on his bag past this week’s World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and next week’s PGA Championship.

“I still consider J.P. one of my best friends, one of my closest friends, but sometimes to preserve a personal relationship, you might have to sacrifice a professional one and that was sort of the decision that I came to in the end,” McIlroy said at Firestone Country Club.

Temperate Northwest gets blasted with furnace-like heat">Temperate Northwest gets blasted with furnace-like heat

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Contributor

PORTLAND, Ore.: Forecasts for triple-digit heat have caused a minor panic across the Pacific Northwest, a region famous for cool weather where many people do not have air conditioning to help them endure the rare furnace-like blast.

In normally temperate Oregon and Washington, families generally get by on warm days by simply drawing shades and running fans. But a searing high-pressure system is expected to make Portland and Seattle hotter than Phoenix, at least for a couple of days.

Many concerned communities have opened cooling centers and warned residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity and keep their dogs out of parked …read more

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Marla Ridenour

Jordan Spieth is a PGA Championship away from a career Grand Slam and less than two weeks from potentially finishing it off.

Any other player who just captured the third leg might be fanatical in his desire, salivating over the sanctified prize.

But Spieth, who turned 24 last week, has been wise beyond his years since he joined the PGA Tour in 2013. He’s putting no pressure on himself in the slam chase, figuring if he’s healthy, he’ll play in 30 more PGAs.

He will use the $9.75 million World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, which opens Thursday at Akron’s Firestone Country Club, to get …read more

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

The Philadelphia Phillies have canceled plans to honor Pete Rose next week because of a woman’s claim she had a sexual relationship with baseball’s hit king when she was a minor.

The woman, identified as Jane Doe this week in a court filing, said Rose called her in 1973, when she was 14 or 15, and they began a sexual relationship in Cincinnati that lasted several years. Rose’s lawyer says the woman’s claims are unverified.

The Phillies were going to induct Rose into their Wall of Fame in an on-field ceremony on Aug. 12. Rose bobbleheads were going to be distributed on …read more

Trump blasts Russia sanctions bill — but still signs it">Trump blasts Russia sanctions bill — but still signs it

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Contributor

WASHINGTON: Dealt a striking congressional rebuke, Donald Trump grudgingly signed what he called a “seriously flawed” package of sanctions against Russia on Wednesday, bowing for the moment to resistance from both parties to his push for warmer ties with Moscow.

Trump signed the most significant piece of legislation of his presidency with no public event. And he coupled it with a written statement, resentful in tone, that accused Congress of overstepping its constitutional bounds, impeding his ability to negotiate with foreign countries and lacking any ability to strike deals.

“Congress could not even negotiate a health care bill after seven years of …read more

Vote tampering claims jolt Venezuela">Vote tampering claims jolt Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela: Revelations on Wednesday that turnout figures were apparently manipulated in a crucial vote for an all-powerful constituent assembly in Venezuela cast a deeper shadow over the controversial body shortly before it was to convene.

The official count of voters in Sunday’s election was off by at least 1 million, according to the head of the voting technology firm Smartmatic — a finding certain to sow further discord over a body that has been granted vast authority to rewrite Venezuela’s constitution and override every branch of government.

Results recorded by Smartmatic’s systems and those reported by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council show …read more

Brazil

President survives vote

Brazil’s embattled president survived a key congressional vote that could have suspended him over a bribery charge, mustering enough support Wednesday night to stay in office and avoid being tried by the country’s highest court. President Michel Temer needed the support of just one-third of the 513 members of the lower Chamber of Deputies, or 171 members. In the end, 263 deputies voted for the president and 227 voted against him. The remaining were abstentions and absences. While Temer was clearly victorious, he won’t likely have much time to celebrate. Attorney General Rodrigo Janot, who …read more

August 3rd, 2017 by Our Webmaster

By Ryan Lewis

The Indians recently added Joe Smith to the bullpen, but they’ll now be without Andrew Miller for a stretch.

The Indians on Wednesday placed Miller on the 10-day disabled list with patella tendonitis in his right knee. In a corresponding move, Adam Plutko was promoted to the majors from Triple-A Columbus. It’s a significant loss for the time being, with Miller remaining one of the elite relievers in baseball and the headliner from last year’s deal at the trade deadline.

According to Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti, this wasn’t something that recently popped up with Miller.

“It’s something Andrew’s been battling …read more
